Safety
Safety is our top priority when planning our activities. Participants of all ages and from all walks of life will find our tailor-made programs safe, challenging, fun and memorable!
Dragonfly's dedication to 'safety first' in all of our programs is reflected through;
- Our choice of sites - We choose all of our sites for their natural beauty, adventure and educational potential, and safety. We stay ahead of other companies by continually exploring new areas and using new sites. All our sites undergo a detailed risk assessment which reviews all possible safety related considerations - including environmental, participant, leader and equipment related factors.
- On-site and activity management protocol - Using our site-by-site risk assessments as guidelines, we develop risk management strategies to minimize risk in each location and program activity. We are continually updating and upgrading these strategies in keeping with international standards and techniques, as well as in relation to new developments and seasonal changes at the sites themselves.
- Professional staff and leadership - Dragonfly staff are experienced, qualified outdoor professionals. Our leaders are first aid trained and carry first aid kits and emergency care supplies with them to the sites at all times. Our staff manual is the base of our in-house training and our leaders join us with a wealth of experience and qualifications attained through their own commitment to the outdoors. Staff undergo regular assessments and evaluations against a set of competencies which we have designed to ensure that we have the right combination of staff and skills on every program.
- Excellent leader to participant ratios - All activities having different ratios, but generally we plan 1:8. This ensures that every participant receives the individual attention they need to be successful and safe on our programs.
- Participant Readiness - Dragonfly offers pre-program preparedness meetings, pre-activity safety talks and participant skill assessments to ensure that participants are physically and mentally prepared for the activities and environment encountered during the program.
- Level of challenge - We strive to find an inclusive and comfortable balance with our activities so that all participants are both challenged and safe. We opt for a 'challenge by choice' approach, whereby participants are encouraged and supported to try and extend themselves beyond their comfort zones. Our programs also have contingency plans and options for modification so that varying skill levels and external conditions can be accommodated.
