Fujian
Many overseas Chinese trace their ancestry to this little visited province of China. With present and future UNESCO sites, history and culture, there is a lot to do and experience.
The Hakka villages we visit are 400 or more years old, with the famous round houses of mud and wood. Some of them once housed hundreds of people at one time! Rivers flow nearby and the hills are cut with tea terraces. It is a step back in time where local villagers still live in their ancestral homes and work the fields.
An emphasis is placed on community, with service in local schools and cultural learning. It is an area rich in living history, and one little touched by outside tourism. Some of the program highlights are:
- Staying in a Hakka Roundhouse
- Hiking through the rice and tea terraces
- Fujian tea culture and production
- Village temples, fengshui, and history
- Community service with local schools
- Overnight at the historical island of Gulangyu
The program begins in Xiamen, a coastal city with regular flights in China and throughout Asia.
The program is designed for five to six days and is easily accessible from within China, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other major cities in the region.
